Now, for some very brief research articles about true health!

Gregory here. I wrote these and sometimes update them as a way to keep learning more and more about how vital the right nutrition and health-promoting activities are. I have tried to keep up on updating an old article regularly for some time but please understand that I can be overwhelmed with doing the simplest things and so I may not always be punctual.

Metabolism Overview/Resting Metabolism

3/1/2023

There are many different aspects of metabolism, which is "the sum of all the chemical processes that occur in your body"(1) and "the internal process by which your body expends energy and burns calories."(2) Let's consider the resting rate of metabolism!
Resting metabolic rate means the rate that allows the mere functions that support life itself(1). Every nutrient taken from food, breath breathed, ounce of blood pumped, and cell grown or repaired means energy used in metabolism(2). Digesting and absorbing food (food's thermic effect) and activity are the other expenditures of metabolism. Those who lead sedentary lifestyles have resting metabolic rate account for about 70% of their total energy used in the day. Having more lean body mass (muscle and organs are included) is the biggest determinant of resting metabolism. NOTE: Physical activity is the greatest overall variable in metabolism, taking up anywhere from 15-50% of total metabolic energy expeditures for the day(1)! [We will consider physical activity's effect in a further article.]
Protein is more thermogenic, or takes more energy to process and absorb, than other nutrients in food(1,2) and may even boost metabolism at each meal! NOTE: Pacing protein, taking it in at more evenly during the day versus one primary chunk at dinner, will "support greater muscle retention and muscle growth" and will be even better for metabolism(1)!
A fasting cleansing protocol, more than just a temporary drop to calorie consumption, provides "a 'reset' to appetite, metabolism, and insulin sensitivity" plus causes the body to declutter cells (autophagy) and deal with toxin-loaded fat stores(1). Green tea has "a compound called epigallocatechin gallate" which may provide a little boost to metabolism. Three cups of green tea has about 250 milligrams, enough to burn off an average of a hundred further calories a day(2).

Dryer Sheets and Health Hazards

3/16/2022

Updated 11/4/2023; originally titled: "Dryer Sheets and General Health Hazards"

Disclaimer: Articles referenced are from 2016-17. Some ingredients/stats about dryer sheets may have changed very significantly since then so this article was written to give a general idea about their health hazards.

As of 2017, the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission didn't require ingredient lists on dryer sheets.
"Seven hazardous air pollutants and 25 volatile organic compounds (VOCs)" were found in the laundry vent emissions of a particular experiment of "scented fabric softening and dryer sheets" used in clean washers and dryers. Included were chemicals present in automotive tail pipe exhaust; benzene and acetaldehyde have no safe level(1).
Fourty-four percent of tested scented laundry products gave off one or more cancer-causing air pollutants(1).
A 2016 study found that 12.5% of folks believed scented laundry products were causing them health problems. These included "respiratory issues, runny noses, asthma attacks, skin issues, migraines and even gastrointestinal symptoms."(1)
Some more rapidly-noticed effects of laundry-product scents are "migraines, asthma attacks, eye and throat irritation and contact dermatitis." Some dryer sheets are especially polluted and may have quaternary ammonium compounds, infamous for bringing on asthma. Other chemicals endanger wild animals(1). Important to remember: skin is "the most absorbent organ in your body."(2)
"Benzyl alcohol- Causes irritation within the upper respiratory tract... nausea, vomiting... and dramatic drops in blood pressure."(2)
"Acetaldehyde... in fake fragrance blends... adversely impacts the kidneys, nervous and respiratory systems."(1)
In the 1990s, an EPA/industry-generated list made of common ingredients in fabric softeners included multiple ingredients implicated in neurological disorders. Brain damage could come from - choloform(2).
Simply line-drying clothes outside saves energy and avoids toxic laundry scent chemicals(2).
My mom uses wool dryer balls in our clothes dryer - a much healthier option!

Lead Poisoning and General Health Effects

2/16/2022

In our sister blog, Rainbows of Autism, I named a few kinds of brain-unhealthy effects that the heavy metal lead has. Please read it with the following: [LINK] There are also numbers of non-brain health effects of lead. We will only mention some of many...
Lead poisoning is especially bad for youngsters, who absorb it more readily and more likely to be exposed. Young children might eat lead paint flakes off walls and woodwork. "Miscarriage, stillbirth... premature birth", and low weight at birth might happen to the fetus/baby of a mother exposed to lead(1).
The government agency OSHA made an 1978 estimate of blood levels due to chronic exposure at which lead poisoning problems can occur. Lead has been found since to cause problems at much lower levels. Kidney problems and high blood pressure happen with blood lead levels at 10 µg/dL in adults. Impaired motor function and attention issues happen between 20 and 40 µg/dL, and above 40, there can be "headache, fatigue, sleep disturbance, joint pain, myalgia, anorexia, and constipation." Some workers might have levels above 60, which can be lethal or cause convulsions, comas, peripheral neuropathy, and severe abdominal cramps(2).
Here are some other lead poisoning health effects:
- Hearing loss(1)
- Eating non-food items like paint chips (pica)(1)
- Vomiting(1)
- Joint/muscle discomfort(1)
- Fatigue/feeling sluggish(1)
Lead can come from pipes, solders, pottery, soil exposed to lead paint or gasoline, bullets, some folk remedies, cosmetics, or tamarind (present in Mexico-sourced candies)(1).

Immune System Part 2: Allergies and Autoimmune

8/11/2021

Updated majorly 1/7/2025. One reference was no longer viable. New reference added with new information.

"Immune System Part 1: Workings Beyond White Blood Cells", published two weeks before on this on July 28th, listed different parts and workings of the immune system beyond white blood cells - even stomach acid! Please refer to Part 1
, particularly as it speaks about what inflammation is, with the following: [LINK]. We now move on to the second of the three-part Immune System article series, on a couple types of haywire immune system responses, allergies and autoimmune issues.

All autoimmune diseases involve the body attacking good cells. Rheumatoid athritis, MS, lupus, and celiac are included. Various foods have immune-boosting nutrients or else autoimmune-inflaming properties - take for example some veggies. Green leafy veggies "are rich in antioxidants and immune-boosting nutrients like vitamin C, vitamin A, and magnesium"; cruciferous veggies have the immune-regulating antioxidant compound glutathione. Nightshades are veggies but they have alkaloids that may increase intestinal inflammation. A study showed that blueberries may be helpful to MS patients(1).
Food allergies are abnormal types of immune responses like hives, breathing constriction, and swelling and are overreactions to proteins of some foods. As much as 8% of US kids have food allergies, compared to approximately 2% of adults. Food intolerances are less serious issues and may cause discomfort, but usually affect the digestive tract more than anything(2).
There are upwards of "160 foods that can cause a reaction in sensitive people, [but] there are eight common foods that account for approximately 90% of all food allergy reactions... [which] include milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, and soybeans". Intolerance for lactose, the milk sugar, comes from "reduced production of enzyme lactase after infancy."(2) The wrong species of gut flora, lack of good species, and species colonizing inappropriate sections of the gut can induce food intolerances, intolerances to healthy prebiotics or sugars, or food allergies (Davis, 66-69, 284). Those conditions may actually be signs of the need for gut-healthy diet, well-targeted probiotics, and other interventions to revamp the gut microbiome(Davis, 67, 283-84).

[Note: Some allergy-causing foods aren't so good for you anyway, or at least when produced wrong. I do avoid wheat as I get brain fog and lowered immune function. My parents were told I was allergic to milk as a baby, and it turned out the nasty chemicals and hormones in that milk were probably the issue, as I did better after a while. For some examples, please click the "Not the Same" tag on the BNH blog menu to see articles on some foods that aren't so good for the body.]

How Hernias Are Promoted (and Not Promoted)

4/7/2021

Updated 2/3/2024

Properly, hernias, as often referred to, are when organs find holes or weak points in muscle and bulge into them(1), most commonly on the lower or upper abdomen(2) but also affecting someplace in the "thigh, stomach, groin or surgical scar in your abdomen". Constipation, heartburn, and acid reflux all cause or promote hernias(1). Abdominal hernias may also in turn "mimic digestive problems like belly pain, vomiting or constipation"(2).
Inadequate fiber consumption promotes constipation in turn - some of the most fiber-rich foods are also protein-rich: "lentils, black beans or split peas". Omega-3 fats in many fish may help reduce hernia-promoting inflammation(1). [Don't get farmed or mercury/pollution-laden!] Both bloating AND constipation will press "
the intestinal tissue further into the abdominal wall" so foods causing excess gas, more commonly legumes and some veggies, may also be an issue with hernias. Swallowing excessive amounts of air while eating or drinking food too quickly will also cause bloat(2).
Inadequate fruit and veggie consumption lowers intake of antioxidants, which help resist succumbing to infections and illness... and heal from them. Many fruits and veggies are non-acidic, including "melons, bananas, guava, papaya, leafy greens, bell peppers,... and carrots. Particularly fiber-rich varieties include raspberries, pears, artichokes, broccoli and peas."(1).

Vegetarian: Not Automatically End-All

10/21/2020

Picture
Vegetarians and vegans do tend to eat more fiber (good for digestive and heart health) than many meat-eaters. At least, that's an average tendency and not an automatic However, excluding meat can mean eating processed foods, including refined snack foods and baked goods, instead of [what you'd stereotype as] veggies, legumes, and other important whole foods(1). [A lot of demonization or overemphasis of different nutrients or food groups is a part of popular diet culture. Getting the whole picture of a healthy diet means paying attention to whatever is proven to be vital to optimal health and finding a balance of the best-quality source(s) to get all of them possible in you.] Many meal replacements focus mainly on calories and protein and not phytonutrients from fruits and veggies playing so many vital bodily roles(2). There can be nasty hexane/chemical extraction used to eke out protein for different products(3). Further on the fiber side, not enough water may be consumed as the flip side of digestive health, flushing any amount of fiber through(1).
Moderated calorie consumption provides energy for the body and vegetarians and vegans do tend to consume less(1) [though again, calories aren't an end-all health strategy]. As cheese is used as a protein source in place of meat for many vegetarians, "ounce-for-ounce, cheese contains only about 80% of the protein found in chicken, but [has] nearly 2.5 times the calories" and therefore is not as protein-efficient(1). Many plant-based proteins tend not to have all nine essential amino acids in them, so combining different sources tends to round out the profile more(2). [Having milk is a food-culture mandate and yet] a cup of almond milk tends to have a gram of protein and a bunch of added sugar compared to 8 grams of protein in cow's milk. Plant foods may include iron but also need Vitamin C to absorb; omega-3 fatty acids and Vitamin B12 are also deficiencies vegetarians are prone to(1).
Vegetarian, vegan, or meat-inclusive diets can be healthy or not. It all depends on the whole context of what's in them. I actually like veggie curry better than a steak by itself so, getting in as good a mix of nutrients as possible can be fun. Culture teaches us that certain foods have to go together in a manner often arbitrary of healthiness, so letting go of cultural food mandates will need to happen at some point as well.

Natural Flavors Versus Artificial Flavors

5/20/2020

Picture
There are certain substances that are natural that are obtained from "plant or animal raw materials" and are extracted by "physical, microbiological, or enzymatic processes"(1). The FDA Code of Federal Regulations states that "flavoring constituents derived from [foods]… whose significant function in food is flavoring rather than nutritional [having a nutritional value]" may be called natural flavors(2). As well, they can't be "obtained by synthesis or isolated through chemical processes" - those are "nature-identical"(1). Artificial flavors typically come from petroleum(1,2) [not a food-intended natural substance!], with "fractional distillation and additional chemical manipulation(1). Artificial flavors' adverse health effects were touched on by our sister blog, Rainbows of Autism, in (link following:) "Toxic Substances: Artificial Flavors and Other Additives."
Transparency on ingredients labels is definitely good. However, when "d-limonene is one of many natural volatile compounds that make citrus taste like citrus... 3-methylbutanal, 3-methyl-l-butanol, and geranial are compounds that make tomato taste like tomato," and "[a]fter completing a university education, certified flavor chemists must spend seven years in apprenticeship to learn the art and science behind flavors", the hundreds of natural flavors extracted from naturally-occurring plant and animal materials will not be able to be on an ingredients label while being recognizable as a harmful substance or no(2).
NOTE: there will be a possible unpleasant-to-mention caveat or two about natural flavors. Castoreum, a natural substance with at least 24 known compounds making it up, is obtained from anal-area castor sacs part of the scenting process of North American or European beavers. It isn't used so much, however, in food - about 300 pounds at a certain point annually(3).

Antiperspirants and Toxic Deodorants

5/6/2020

Picture
Antiperspirants don't just seek to neutralize odors that come out of armpits. They use aluminum to swell sweat glands closed so they don't release moisture. The thing is, this might seem convenient yet is counterproductive for health. This means the body is stuck with chemicals it wants to expel, otherwise released through perspiration. A German study showed that "effects of roll-on, stick, and spray antiperspirant lasted through tests of stress, physical exertion, and heat a full 48 hours after application."(1)
The World Health Organization stated its suspicions that aluminum links up to Alzheimer's way back in 1993. Used long-term, "it might be responsible for the tangles and plaques in the brain of Alzheimer patients." It most certainly has been shown to accumulate in the brain and is classified as a "heavy metal" (due to specific gravity)(2).
Aluminum isn't the only antiperspirant or regular deodorant danger, though. Commonly-used preservatives BHT or parabens mime estrogen and thus disrupt the body. Formaldehyde isn't just used for corpses by far: and it causes cancer. Steareths are also carcinogens (cancer-causes). Triclosan, the once more widely-touted antibacterial agent, is an endocrine (hormone) disrupter. Phthalates and musks are further endocrine disrupters: the trouble is, laws have protected companies from needing to identify different "fragrances," which could be these and potential hidden allergens which certain sensitive individuals couldn't find directly on the label(1). A middle-aged man got severe muscle pain from antiperspirants(2)!
So, the alternative is to keep what comes out of the armpits from reeking in a natural way with pure, natural ingredients(2). [I shower with natural soap and wear natural deodorant. Some natural deodorants especially work for different people better than others, from my experience. Some stores carry mineral salt sticks - I've used that, a coconut deodorant, and a sage herbal stick and spray.]

Mycotoxins: Surprisingly Common and Nasty Mold Stuff

1/29/2020

Picture

There are lots of molds, filament-shaped fungi, in the environment(1), make their mark on about a quarter of agricultural products(2), especially when stored and processed improperly. They whip out multiple types of(1) compounds called mycotoxins. "[M]ultiple sources now refer to [one type called] Aflatoxins as the MOST deadly naturally occurring toxin." It most avidly adores peanuts, and the top exposure is from peanuts and corn from the humid American Southeast in particular. Even though aflatoxins are a recognized health hazard, the FDA still allows 20 parts per billion of aflatoxins for humans. Dog food, often containing corn, is allowed to have a good number of times higher amounts of aflatoxins (300 ppb). "It shows up in other grains and legumes as well, including quinoa, coffee beans, cocoa beans, soybeans, spices, dairy, [and] dried fruit."(2) A couple of workers have been reported to fall seriously ill cleaning a dusty, moldy grain silo. Quite a few coffee beans are spread on the ground to dry, directly contacting soil, and otherwise contract molds during the processes of "harvesting, drying, processing, and storage." A study of 103 coffee samples of varying forms purchased from supermarkets turned up only 4 not containing mycotoxins. Roasting doesn't eliminate mycotoxins once they're in(1).
Aflatoxins have tons of ill effects, including: liver(1,2) and kidney damage, immune reactions, allergies, cell damage, cancer, abnormal development of children, loss of coordination, sleep problems, memory problems, and tumors in a whole bunch of locations in the body. Dogs who consume them can experience "
severe vomiting with bloody diarrhea, anorexia, fever, sluggishness, discolored urine, and jaundice."(2) Another mycotoxin type, ochratoxin, affects the kidneys at high levels(1).
Valencia peanuts mostly source from New Mexico - drier climates have less risk of aflatoxins, though heirloom jungle peanuts from the Amazon also tend to be free of them(2). [It is best to buy coffee that is tested for both aflatoxins and ochratoxins - coffee also tends to have pesticides and heavy metals unless labeled otherwise.] Chlorophyll and proper glutathione levels help keep aflatoxins from absorbing and help detoxify them respectively(2).

Artificial Colors and the General Population

9/25/2019

I touched on artificial food additives in general and their role in wreaking neurological havoc (especially in special-needs people) in an earlier post on our sister blog Rainbows of Autism; please click on the link here to read it: http://www.rainbowsofautism.com/toxic-substances-artificial-flavors-and-other-additives/. However, I feel it pertinent to explore artificial colors further beyond the neurological impacts. After all, they are just one example of tons of toxic things members of the general population may give up mainly if they had ____ health condition and yet not otherwise. Remember, these artificial colors, for what detrimental effects they have, make things kinda look cool, not really add nutrient or otherwise value.
Cereals, other packaged foods, sports drinks, other drinks, and fast foods all are examples of food products tending to contain artificial colors. Tons of artificial colors are named as color-numbers, as Red 3, Yellow 5, and Yellow 6. The FDA actually identified Red 3, as a carcinogen (causing cancer!) way back in 1985, even saying it was
"'of greatest public health concern,'" and yet, as of 2016, 5 million pounds of it alone have been loaded into food! It also causes allergic reactions! [Cancer certainly is something that isn't just a sensitivity with, say, autism or phenylketonuria: after all, anyone would die by inhaling enough car exhaust.] Further, "Yellow 6... has been found to cause testicular tumors and cancerous growths in the adrenal glands of lab rats." "Red 40, Yellow 5 and Yellow 6...have also been found to contain illegally high amounts of benzidine and 4-aminobiphenyl... known carcinogens."(1)
There are also artificial colors with names likes "rose bengal (RB), phroxine (PL), amaranth, [and] erythrosine B." These last dyes are some of the xanthene food dyes. Various xanthene dyes have been studied to inhibit enzymes metabolizing drugs under light irradiation. Also under light irradiation, red cosmetics with certain xanthene dyes may "react with proteins on skin under lighting and may lead to rough skin."

Two Highly Nasty Historic Poisons... Kept Kicking

3/27/2019

Hydrogen cyanide is a pesticide first used in the 1880s in California. The poisonous gas interferes with cell function. Form Zyklon A, developed in Germany, released the hydrogen cyanide with heat and water exposure. A form of that was used in World War I as a chemical weapon. Then, form Zyklon B came along in sealed canisters in the early 1920s. Nazi Germany used it to kill tons of people in their extermination camps, especially Auschwitz. Zyklon B, sadly, was produced way after the war in certain countries and has been used most often as an industrial chemical but also pesticide and cleaner in different places - a similar product, for fumigation, was manufactured as late as 2015 by a certain Czech Republic company(1)!
Agent Orange, used in the Vietnam War to expose Vietnamese positions by removing overarching jungle, is particularly well-known. It caused cancer in both Americans and Vietnamese exposed to it. Yet, major ingredient 2, 4-D is actually still very much alive and dangerous - used on crops to where genetically-modified (GMO) corn is being called "Agent Orange corn." Agent Orange Food Disorder, or pesticide disease, is caused by a steady stream of consumed toxic pesticides in general(2).
Zyklon A and B and Agent Orange, in other words, technically didn't die out in history. The fact that such substances were allowed to continue on in various forms begs the question, are they the only such historic killers/poisons out there? Truly, there are tons of others.

Weight-Loss Disclaimer:
Weight loss should not be considered typical. In a study performed in 2012 by University of Illinois at Chicago researchers, subjects lost an average of 9 pounds with an average of 2 pounds of the loss from visceral fat after 30 days on an Isagenix system. The subjects also had a greater level of adherence and had more consistent weight loss from week to week compared to subjects on a traditional diet.
